‘All The Best’ - Ng Lung Wai Solo Art Show
We cordially invite all of you to share and enjoy the first of its kind visual experience in the world, folding paint to make paintings.
Hong Kong artist Ng Lung Wai, through his years of study and research on painting, rethinks what a painting is. Conventionally a painting is defined as the application of paint upon a surface or the result of such application. He manages to create layers of paint and make sheets of paint like making paper sheets.
He regards such making of paint sheets as a blessing; he then use those paint sheets to fold about 10,000 small boats, and put them on canvas as paintings. ‘At the age of 7, I learned to fold my first paper boat. Now after a few decades, I could fold paint boats; such a blessing.’ Ng said
Ng sees a boat as a life journey, ‘through twists and turns, rain or shine, bad times and good times, we could still thrive and go on. We are all blessed.’ After successfully folding boats with paint only, thinking of blessing, he decides to use those 5 colours of the windhorse flags common seen in Tibetan and Nepalese region. Those 5 colours symbolise 5 elements, sky, air, fire, water and earth. People in those regions hang those coloured flags for all the people, praying for all to have love, empathy and peace.
Art Exchanges with Scholars and Professionals in Art
For his research on painting, he also asked professionals and scholars on art and painting for help, historical view and contemporary sense of painting. He did received replies from a group of scholars, including Professor Milly Thompson from Goldsmith, University of London and Professor Florian Knothe, Director of University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong.
Through this art show and sharing, Ng wish all of you with all the best.
